Valve’s new game is free and “not Portal 3”

🌐

The Steam Deck release date is just around the corner, and Valve has one last surprise in store for us: a new free-to-play game in the Portal and Half-Life universes, designed to showcase the portable machine’s new capabilities. The Aperture Desk Job appears to be following in the footsteps of previous demos such as Aperture Hand Lab and The Lab, with small-scale demos of some new Valve hardware.

Aperture Desk Job will launch for free via Steam on March 1, and while Valve says it’s “designed as a free-to-play short clip of Valve’s new Steam deck” and will “guide you through the controls and capabilities of the handheld,” it’s not yet available Know if you’ll really need a deck to play with it. Presumably, you can play it with regular PC controls and pretend you’re using a portable device. It just gets less interesting.

Either way, Valve wants you to “lower your expectations” because “this is not a sequel to Portal.” As the name suggests, it’s just set up in Portal’s Aperture Science.
