Warheim opens new Frost Cave to Viking public

Valheim is PC Gamer’s best game of 2021, and for good reason: it popped up and proved itself as the king of co-op and rampaging Norse mythological creatures. The game gets regular updates a year after its release, the biggest of which is Fireplace and Home, which is now adding Frost Caves to its world.

The Frost Caverns update is live on Valheim’s Steam public beta branch. Any player can opt in by right-clicking a game in their library, selecting Properties, then Betas, and entering the code “yesimadebackups”. The public test branch can then be accessed: as the password suggests, it’s a good idea to backup your regular saves. If all this sounds too much of a hassle, it’s likely to appear in regular games soon.

The update will generate new locations in the player’s world, and the Frost Caverns biome will appear in previously unexplored areas. Frost Caverns are basically cold dungeons with three new enemies (Ulvs, Cultists, and Bats), new buildings and crafting loot, and a new event called “You Stir the Cauldron.” Maybe you just make some delicious hot soup?

The patch also optimizes the game for Steam Decks, adds full controller support, and adds pause functionality for single-player games. In terms of quality of life fixes, “construction markings are more subtle and indicate part rotation”, easier to close chat, I have absolutely no idea what that means: “corpse runs give carry weight bonus to compensate for unequipped belts.”

Here are the full patch notes. If frost holes aren’t your bag, heck, why not make the whole thing a Springfield.
