What if: WB made Batman Arkham Knight 2 with Batman’s son?

What if: WB made Batman Arkham Knight 2 with Batman’s son?

2015’s Batman Arkham Knight is arguably the ultimate Batman game, and certainly one of the greatest comic book games of all time. It features an open-world Gotham City that still looks good today, and you’ll encounter most of the franchise’s galleries of stellar rogues — even the undead clown — and it has the perfect evolution of developer Rocksteady’s influential combat system. So what happened to Batman Arkham Knight 2?

Rocksteady has moved on to Suicide Squad: Killing the Justice League, and Batman Arkham Origins developer Warner Bros. Montreal is developing Gotham Knight. Granted, they’re not in the same universe, but neither game seems to have Batman.

However, it shouldn’t be like this. While Batman Arkham Knight apparently ends with Bruce Wayne’s death, the real ending provides a flashpoint for a potential future sequel. In this new world, Commissioner Gordon serves as mayor, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon marry and retire from crime-fighting, and an almost diabolical Dark Knight appears on the scene.

This references a 2007 comic by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert in which Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, becomes the heir to the cape and actually makes a deal with the devil to come get it. However, unless Rocksteady recalls it in Suicide Squad, this ending is currently nowhere to be found. What if it happens? What if either Rocksteady or WB Montreal were producing a Batman Arkham Knight sequel in a future Gotham, and Bruce Wayne’s son was an even more sinister vigilante?

A Batman Arkham Knight sequel that continued the idea was reportedly in development at WB Montreal, but was canceled. On the surface, Batman Arkham Knight 2 is likely to have similar gameplay to its predecessor, with an expanded open-world Gotham City, a blockbuster main story supported by side quests, and a similar combat system, with Some new moves, enemy archetypes, and gadgets.

While the gameplay may not require any major changes, the open world itself is barely recognizable. Various concept art purportedly leaked show a dystopian Gotham with Wayne Tower in ruins and crime rampant on the streets. Arkham Knight 2 looks more like a sci-fi dystopia with Robocop stripes than any recent depiction of Gotham City. It’s set in the future, where villains have to grow old or re-imagined, and concept art suggests we’ll encounter two faces as crime bosses, a female black mask, and a reborn poison ivy.

Imagine escaping New York’s anarchist urban sprawl with a DC twist

It’s easy for the game to introduce elements of Batman’s transcendence — a futuristic spinoff of Batman: The Animated Series — and have an aging Bruce Wayne coach his successor. Equipped with an almost Iron Man-like bat suit with full flight capabilities, Beyond would be a really fun way to get around Gotham City.

The city itself could also play a bigger role, perhaps certain areas are “occupied zones” owned by supervillains that Batman must clear to travel through them safely. Maybe other DC heroes could show up, like Superman did in “Beyond Batman.”

Damian Wayne Arkham’s game needs a darker tone to match the tougher heroes. After being trained by Ra’s Al Ghul and his League of Assassins, Damian is far less binding than Batman. Another major DC game series, Injustice, positioned Damian firmly on the side of fascist Superman, as opposed to his own father. Whether all of this will translate into allowing players to kill people in Arkham games is another matter, but the various combat and stealth kills will be more brutal than Damian’s.

Damian Wayne is a bit of a nuisance, as Injustice Players attests

It would be a very different experience from other Batman games, and it would be an unexpected but welcome change of direction for the Arkhamverse. Gotham itself hasn’t changed much throughout the series, so it refreshes the formula considerably to play in a more chaotic and unruly version of the city; imagine escaping New York’s anarchic urban sprawl with a DC twist. Rocksteady has changed a lot from Batman Arkham Knight, but format, setting and tone still feel too familiar – Akrham Knight 2 has the potential to avoid being just another batman game.

Of course, that’s probably why the sequel was canceled. It’s hard to hype another Batman game shortly after Arkham Knight, and in Damian Wayne, a barely recognizable Batman in a truly nightmarish Gotham Roaming around the city, selling to audiences can be just as difficult — certainly not in lieu of a Superman or Wonder Woman game. Also, as Injustice players attested, Damian Wayne is a bit of a nuisance, so the idea of 20+ hours in his company is probably beyond the most ardent DC Comics fan ever. range.

While it’s frustrating that there hasn’t been a DC game like Batman Arkham Knight in seven years, it’s probably a good thing WB Montreal dropped it in favor of Gotham Knights. Batman may disappear from the game’s roster of playable heroes, but choose between Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Tim Drake’s more endearing Robin, all in an easier Sounds interesting in the recognizable but massively expanding Gotham City.

DC’s upcoming lineup of games is so varied, that’s probably what a comic book game needs right now. When Batman finally returns, Bruce Wayne may be wearing the cape again. Still, while it’s all probably for the best, that doesn’t stop us from wondering what a Damian Wayne Batman game will look like.
