Windows is not as good as SteamOS on the Steam platform

Microsoft fans rejoice! You can now install Windows 10 on the newly released Steam platform. However, you may want to think twice before making the switch, as using the operating system instead of SteamOS when playing certain Steam games may result in performance degradation.

According to LinusTechTips testing, games like Hitman 3 take a big hit when running on the Steam platform with Windows, dropping frame rates from 34fps on SteamOS to just 19 fps. Doom Eternal’s Deck performance also leaves a lot to be desired, as it appears to be running at an average of 45fps instead of 60fps. Surprisingly, Elden Ring wasn’t a complete disaster, as there was only a 7fps difference compared to Linux.

Gaming performance aside, Windows 10 optimizations on Steam Deck are questionable, as basic UI elements like the brightness slider and battery status currently suck. Handheld gaming PCs also appear to be struggling with the operating system’s sleep mode, with the device either “waiting forever or never waking up,” as LinusTechTips puts it.

It’s worth noting that Windows 11 is not yet compatible with the Steam platform due to Microsoft’s firmware TPM limitations. Dual-booting isn’t an option either, which could make temporarily patching Windows 10 more of a hassle than it’s worth.

Of course, some Steam deck pre-orders are now expected to arrive in Q3 2022, so optimizations may improve until more gamers get their hands on the handheld.
