It might sound a little odd, coming from a hardware nut that’s better suited for a larger desktop PC at home, but I’m excited about the possibility of integrated graphics in AMD’s new mobile CPUs. The Ryzen 6000 series will be coming to laptops soon, and will appear in all the usual gaming machines along with the best mobile graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD. While they’ll soon be the go-to models for serious gaming, what actually excites me the most is the prospect of ultra-thin and lightweight machines.

Imagine a tiny 13-inch laptop that doesn’t have room to keep a massive GPU cool, but can handle the heat generated by AMD’s latest APUs. A machine that can usually deliver a smooth experience with integrated graphics of yore, but it can turn hands to 1080p gaming at a reasonable frame rate. That’s the promise of AMD’s new RDNA 2-powered APU.

AMD’s integrated graphics have gone beyond the first-gen RDNA architecture, upgrading from Vega to the latest technology, which means if nothing else, it can scream its improvements over Ryzen 5000 mobile chips.

At this point, I may only have AMD’s rating on actual performance, but it’s consistently maintained a 2x performance gain compared to the previous gen, which means that in many less demanding 1080p games, you’re suddenly into 60fps field of. Granted, this will usually be at the lowest possible setting, but if framerate isn’t that important for the game in question, you might be able to dabble in a mid-range setting around 30 fps.

There are two different iGPUs that will be squeezed into the new Ryzen 6000 series mobile parts, the AMD Radeon 680M offers 12 CUs and clocks at 2,400MHz, while the 660M has 6 CUs at 1,900MHz. We’ll have to see for ourselves how fair these GPUs are in gaming when the first laptops start landing (and now), but from the graphs AMD has shown, they do look surprisingly capable.

The fact that Ryzen 6000 mobile chips are so comprehensive makes the deal even sweeter. You’re looking for PCIe 4.0 support for great SSD storage options, DDR5 and Wi-Fi 6E. These chips are also an 8-core, 16-thread model across the stack, which means plenty of raw processing tasks are available as well.

Intel’s Alder Lake also hit the market around the same time, which is sure to offer some interesting tech. Even so, what got me most excited about this year’s laptops is the RDNA 2 graphics integrated into the Ryzen 6000. Hopefully, laptop makers will make products that make the most of them.
