World of Tanks studio fires creative director for expressing support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
World of Tanks studio Wargaming has fired creative director Sergey Burkatovskiy over his public support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a now-deleted Facebook post after the Russian attack, Burkatovskiy said he supported “the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, DPR [Donetsk People’s Republic] and LPR [Luhansk People’s Republic].” Wargaming, a Belarusian company that employs hundreds of developers in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, quickly denied the statement, telling Russian gaming site Cyber.Sports.ru that the statement was “his personal opinion, with the company.” The studio added that it is now “focused on helping our more than 550 Kyiv colleagues and their families.” “
The situation escalated a day later, when Bulkatowski posted another message on Facebook, saying he “breaks up with VG.” (Some sites translate “VG” to “WG,” which means Wargaming.) Wargaming later confirmed his departure in a statement emailed to PC Gamer.
“Sergey Burkatovskiy expressed his personal views on social media, which in no way reflect the company’s position,” a Wargaming representative said. “He has been fired and no longer works for the company.”
Wargaming also clarified changes to World of Tanks’ online advertising policies, which were recently published in a not entirely clear statement Sent to affiliates. When the invasion began, all Wargaming advertising ceased globally; the studio also decided to redesign its inventory to remove images of advancing tanks and other military vehicles. Wargaming’s Kyiv studio donates 30 million hryvnia ($1 million) to the Ukrainian Red Cross as the battle for control of the capital continues.
“At Wargaming, the safety and security of our employees is a top priority. Currently, all available company resources are helping and supporting our 550+ colleagues: providing them with alternative housing, early payroll, additional funds to help with travel and relocation,” said the Wargaming representative.
“We are helping the families of our employees travel to neighboring countries and arrange accommodation for them. Finally, Wargaming Kyiv donated $1 million today to the Ukrainian Red Cross. The funds will be used to support Ukrainian hospitals and doctors, citizens who have been displaced and Other important activities of humanitarian organizations are carried out as needed.”
Wargaming said it would provide further support for humanitarian relief efforts “if the situation warrants it”.
