World of Warcraft’s next expansion will be revealed in 43 days

Following a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard for alleged discrimination and harassment, the company announced the indefinite suspension of BlizzCon, its annual fan convention. But development on the game continues amid the controversy, and Blizzard’s business side is looking for smaller, more targeted ways to make announcements about upcoming software, including the next World of Warcraft expansion.
“On April 19, the World of Warcraft development team will announce the next expansion,” the company said in a new announcement. “We’re excited to show you what we’ve been doing and where your adventures in Azeroth are going next.” There are no details yet on what form the announcement will take.
Historically, World of Warcraft expansions have come out roughly every two years, which would allow the upcoming expansion to be released in 2022. However, given Blizzard’s disruptions over the past few years — not just lawsuits, but the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the entire industry — it’s not surprising to see expansion slip through that window.
Blizzard also plans to announce the next Hearthstone expansion next week, on March 15. The long teased Warcraft mobile game will be revealed in May.
