Xbox boss wants to get more people to play World of Warcraft

Microsoft intends to acquire Activision Blizzard, pending regulatory approval, and in a few years we’ll see World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Candy Crush promoted as first-party Xbox games. Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, seems clear that he wants more people to play these games, but he himself explained some of his hopes for the deal in a new interview.

“I want to play World of Warcraft within five years more than the people now,” Spencer tell reporter Stephen Totillo“I hope in five years more people will be playing Call of Duty, and in five years more people will be playing Candy Crush, because we’re making it more accessible to more people.”

So what does “more accessible to more people” mean? Spencer is far from confirming World of Warcraft: Console Edition or anything like that, but you can see it happening given how Xbox is increasingly distributing games platform-agnostic. In a world where just about everything Microsoft puts out is available for cloud streaming, that distinction probably doesn’t make sense anyway.

“When I was growing up, Blizzard was almost as good as Pixar in terms of quality,” Spencer Say Later. “That’s what I want to achieve the goal of these brands, I would love the opportunity to work with the creative team to make this possible.”

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry. You can read about all the progress so far in this regularly updated explainer article.

At present, in addition to waiting for the release date of Watching Pioneer 2 and the release date of Diablo 4, we know that Blizzard is developing a survival game that has not yet been named.
