XCOM 2: The Chosen Battle gets its own long-running war overhaul

In 2017, we described Long War 2 as a “must-play remake of XCOM 2,” transforming the brilliant turn-based strategy game, slowing and deepening the campaign against alien occupation of Earth. As the title suggests, it’s a follow-up to Long War and an excellent mod for 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Now there’s a sequel, Long War of the Chosen, a port of the Long War 2 mod for the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen expansion, live on Steam.

Just like its predecessors, Battle of the Chosen makes major changes to the original game:

  • Build resistance by linking districts and recruiting rebels in their safe havens
  • Use those safe haven rebels to detect missions for you, then you have to infiltrate before the mission expires
  • Send out multiple squads at once, adjusting gear and composition to ensure they can infiltrate in time
  • Watch ADVENT react to your actions by strengthening areas (making the mission more difficult) and retaliating against your shelter
  • Deal with the more challenging versions of the Chosen in strategic layers and in Retaliation missions (they no longer randomly spawn in missions)
  • Discover a new research tree with several new technologies and a range of new proving ground projects
  • Take advantage of eight new soldier tiers, each with three ability options and an extra tier (eight instead of the vanilla’s seven)
  • Up to two soldier levels per faction, all of which have been completely redone from the Chosen War
  • Train officers who provide powerful buffs and abilities to your squad
  • Enhanced SPARK and more challenging alien rulers are available if you install the corresponding DLC
  • Encounter brand new enemies that force you to adjust your tactics

The modders stated that they tried to make Clash of the Chosen as close to Long Term War 2 as possible, but due to the differences between XCOM 2 and the Clash of the Chosen expansion, some changes were necessary. A full rundown of the differences between the two, including changes to enemies, shelters, perks, weapons, gear, and rules — a rather long list actually — is on ufopaedia.org.

To play The Chosen One’s Long War, if you have the Alien Hunters DLC installed, you will need to subscribe to the mod page and the Alien Hunters Community Highlander page. You also need to turn off framerate smoothing, which “breaks” the mod for some reason.

In terms of gameplay, the creators recommend starting with the minimum mods needed to make sure it works (some reports of mod conflicts pop up in the comments), check the advanced options to make sure it’s set up the way you want, and then start at least One difficulty level lower than you would normally play in the base game, “unless you’re already very familiar with Long War 2.”

For those new to Long War 2, there is a long list of resources for new players on Github. You can also keep up to date with the Chosen War on Discord and Reddit.
