You can now play Wordle on Game Boy
The viral word game Wordle has attracted a lot of money-grabbing copycats, but most tributes aren’t free and run on decades-old hardware. An intrepid modder designed a simple version of the game that would run on Game Boy hardware.
Twitter user chidranija Show off their craft with short lines. It displays the familiar Wordle interface with a simple letter entry underneath, and works on the original Game Boy model and Analogue Pocket. If you don’t have Game Boy or Analogue hardware, you can play around with the browser version, or download a ROM to actually play on Nintendo’s first handheld system.
Unlike viral word games, it’s not limited to one puzzle that everyone shares every day. Instead, you can keep playing as much as you want, because when you win or lose one word, the puzzle automatically resets to another.
Ghidraninja pointed out that due to the limited size of the ROMs, they couldn’t hold a large number of “real” words, so the game used a filter to check that the input word was one of the 8,000 most common English words. This does have a high error rate, though, so you’re likely to type in a word that doesn’t actually exist.
Meanwhile, the real Wordle that caused the viral sensation has been sold to The New York Times and will be integrated as part of the newspaper’s puzzle section. The company said the game will remain free “initially” but it will be part of its strategy to grow its user base in some way.
