Biomutant is a boring game that survives by charm. What other open world games feature bipedal mutant cats as the protagonists and specialize in martial arts? In this role-playing game, you can jump off your grotesque, grinning horse, summon a mass of slime around yourself, roll up your enemies like an ant, and “detonate” the slime to make them fly Get up, then end at a slow speed-a sporty Max Payne-style electronic bullet fired from the muzzle with a horn. Sadly, the empty progress and uninterrupted narrator sucked up so much fun in Biomutant.

This performance washes out and unifies the impressive breadth and creativity of the catastrophe model, and hides their surface fables with deadly pomp and environment. It is easy to understand why Biomutant has attracted so many Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comparison. However, graphic combat design never encourages you to specify equipment for unique challenges.

In my first few hours, I put a toxic toilet brush and a hot rolling pin together in a dual-wield melee, forcing each enemy into a comical vomiting or pants on fire animation, and the health bar collapsed within a few seconds. Just a few hours of exploration and side missions gave me a lot of high-level loot, making most vendors, upgrade stations, and basic crafting systems themselves useless for most of my games. Since there is no need to purchase or upgrade items, I do not need to add any upgrade points to my barter skills, and I can only recall two small conversations that benefited from my high persuasiveness. So everything is focused on health, strength, agility and my mutated psi ability. The difficulty option cannot explain the over-equipment and simple combat design in Biomutant. If you take a long detour, you will soon overtake whatever it throws at you.

But the charm is here again. My Kylo Ren looks like a JNCO jeans catalog model decorated with ferrets that almost makes me float. If only my big pants could make a big difference. And I guess they do, because despite all the problems, I still like some of the content of Biomutant.

I enjoy it with a painful smile, like the terrible smile of my spherical dome horse. I gritted my teeth in the painful narrative and unfounded progress, just to see what kind of damn puppet it will throw at me next. Biomutant is a luxurious cartoon three-dimensional model, which is different from anything on the PC, just playing or listening is not much fun.
