So we have ended IO Interactive’s so-called assassination world trilogy, which started with the Danish developer’s first reboot of the killer in 2016. These are some of the best system-driven stealth games on the PC, and the killer 3 series ends with a series of first-class levels-some of which are among the best in the entire killer series. This is the spiritual and mechanical continuation of the first two games, but IO still has some surprises. Especially a level may just be a masterpiece of the studio.

I am in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Berlin. Slender lasers and spotlights swept across the gloomy dance floor, revealing a sea of shaking heads hypnotized by beating electronic music. The music is so loud and the bass is so deep, making my headphones vibrate. But I am not here because Agent 47 has given up the contract killing and joined the German carnival scene, although this will be a very interesting way to end the story.I’m here to murder a team of deadly assassins, they are also trying to murder I.

Ten killers are patrolling the warehouse and the ruined industrial wasteland around it. The point is: they know what I look like, even if I am wearing a disguise. I can also change clothes and slip away from the humble security guard, but these well-trained killers are not so easy to be fooled. If they see me, they will open fire, which means I have to rely on clusters of pills and maze-like buildings to hide myself.

The target of most killers is the coward hiding in the fortress behind the armed guard wall, which makes these guys very excited to fight. This is a completely different dynamic, and therefore one of the challenging tasks in the trilogy. There is not even any mission story in this level, and the hint system in the game usually suggests killing your target in a fun way. This encourages you to try the sandbox and dream your own way.

Now all I have to do is find a way to kill them without anyone noticing, in front of thousands of witnesses, in a carnival

To complicate matters, the assassins are also disguised. In order to identify them, I must steal a headset and listen to their conversation. When I found that someone was talking to their processor in instinctive mode-highlighting targets, points of interest, weapons, etc.-their cover was blown up and they were permanently marked on the map. All I have to do now is find a way to kill them without anyone noticing, in front of thousands of witnesses, in a carnival. Of course I can shoot and escape, but this is not a way to play a killer.

At first glance it seems impossible. Some targets follow conventions, and they are often surrounded by people. One of the leaders even had a bodyguard who never left him. But the beauty of the killer lies in carefully studying these large and complex levels, making a mental map, and finding loopholes in the security for exploitation. When you finally manage to kill five of the assassins—enough to make others escape—it feels incredible.

Although “Hitman 3” builds on the solid foundation laid by the first two parts of the trilogy, sharing the same AI, stealth system and user interface, IO also took this opportunity to conduct some experiments with its proven formula. The complex and open Berlin level is the level where the studio has ever trusted the killer player to take the lead and solve the problem by himself. Surprisingly, in the other levels, there are only three mission stories per map, while the levels in the first two games averaged about ten.

Opportunities still exist: carefully set traps, disguised people, shortcuts, sliding buttons. This time they just don’t have clear road signs, forcing you to interact more with your surroundings. In essence, this is still a very classic killer game, but in many ways, it is a more interesting and experimental game. In a level in a dusty old mansion in Dartmoor, England, Agent 47 poses as a private detective and solves the murder mystery directly from Agatha Christie’s novel. This is a gimmick, but an interesting and unique spin for a fairly typical assassination mission.

The mansion itself is very beautifully built. Oil paintings hang on either side of the long dark corridor leading to the bright, richly decorated living room. There is a labyrinth of secret passage behind the wall, and people can be spotted through peepholes. There is also a wonderful feeling of isolation. The house stands alone in the vast and overcast wilderness, extending endlessly into the distance. No one does place Much like IO Interactive, in Hitman 3 you will find some of the best works by developers so far.

Chongqing is another bright spot. Compared to Berlin and Dartmoor, this is a very simple task, but an incredible level design. Above, the rain-soaked streets are buzzing, with neon fluorescent signs, noodle restaurants, apartment buildings and winding alleys filled with trash. Below is a gleaming futuristic facility with multi-level security, heavily armed guards and ventilation systems. This incredibly complex dual-stack level is one of the most impressive things IO has created; both in terms of atmosphere and aesthetics, and in how many interesting ways to navigate it.

As for the other levels, “Hitman 3” begins with a fascinating evening party where Agent 47 travels to Dubai and sneaks into the top of its tallest building. He entered the checkpoint on a parachute, climbed through the window, put on a tuxedo, and blended into the crowd-as if we needed more evidence to prove that IO loves James Bond. It is also a real visual enjoyment, with magnificent views of huge gilded palm trees, reflecting pools and the misty city. But although its charm is that it is a fairly simple and reserved level, it feels more like a tutorial for new players to learn easily.

This incredibly complex dual-stack level is one of the most impressive things created by IO

Dubai launched a digital camera, a new gadget that 47 has been in his inventory, no matter what you choose during the mission planning stage. With it, you can scan things for additional intelligence or hack electronic panels to trigger certain things-for example, activating the frosted glass of a futuristic window to cover you, or remotely opening the vent cover. This is a boring addition, really, it feels a bit inappropriate in a killer game. But levels are almost never designed around it, so fortunately it is not too intrusive. Good for it, I do like how you use the zoom function for reconnaissance.

Later, 47 went to Mendoza, Argentina, and sneaked into another high-end party: this time at the winery. The golden evening sun fell on the vineyards, which looked beautiful, and the mission story involving the sniper was particularly creepy. The level is divided into a winery where parties are held, scattered rocky foothills patrolled by Gaucho guards, and a colonial villa where one of your targets lives. This is another relatively safe level, but it is more detailed and complex than Dubai.

The sixth and final map is located between Romania’s rugged Carpathian Mountains and is not a typical killer at all. It is more like an action movie, aiming to complete the story of Agent 47 in a spectacular way. This is a carefully choreographed, visually impressive ending, but it is scripted in nature. Without destroying anything, the nature of the level means that there is no room for exploration. You do have some opportunities to unleash your creativity, but in most cases you are just doing what you are told. This makes it the weakest by default, even if it is made with the same level of care and polish that defines all IO levels.

Over the years, IO has been very good at designing many small stealth challenges that distract its levels. The placement of guards, improvised weapons, blind spots, security cameras, and corpse hiding places is usually perfect. There are countless tiny, satisfying moments in these levels, where you are given only It is smart enough to defeat artificial intelligence and use the environment to your advantage. You rarely feel forced to a corner, or when you can’t find a way out, this shows the quality of the game design. As you unlock other tools and gadgets, the sandbox will only become deeper and more diverse.

Although there are several weaker levels, Killer 3 is a sensational stealth game. Berlin, Chongqing and Dartmoor represent the best of the series, which is a good way to end the trilogy. If you own the first two games, you can-once Epic figure out how-access all these levels here, with improved visual effects and the ability to use the new game’s gadgets and weapons. In doing so, this can easily become one of the best games on PC. If this is a review of the entire trilogy, I will add a few more points to the review score. But even in its own right, “Hitman 3” is an excellent video game, and the perfect swan song of Agent 47.
