Keener: “Bridge of Souls” is a bystander, and Pixar, which has been flying around, makes sense to some extent. The lush world and its big-eyed residents exude individuality. Kena: Bridge of Spirits may look like a Zelda game at first glance, but it is a major linear action-adventure game that takes place on a large map, and you rarely need to backtrack your steps. In any case, the map is dotted with warp points, and the game is automatically saved periodically, so you will never be in danger of losing too much progress or repeatedly crossing the same blank area. It allows the story to evolve in 8 to 10 hours of running time, without much friction except for some potentially tricky battles, depending on the difficulty you choose. Overall, “Bridge of Souls” is a pleasant voyage through the waters of the familiar action platform.

Kaina herself is a spiritual mentor. Her job is to help the soul leave the mortal world. This means looking for relics in harmony with the souls in the three areas, cleansing up corruption and defeating the less friendly souls on the way. Looking for personal items to gently move the soul, I can understand, but repeatedly tapping them on the face with a stick? It looks very unorthodox, but I think it shows my understanding of the spirit.

The battle, there are many of them, works well, but I can’t be more enthusiastic about it. The strategic use of game design conventions is not a bad thing in itself, but Kena cannot go beyond conventions in any area.

Art and story help support the so-so gameplay, but there are still battles and platform highlights to discover. In the end one of the bosses is very good, forcing you to constantly look around and switch between bow and arrow and staff. Once you unlock it, sticky bombs can also confuse things. It is useful in combat (and mandatory for one type of enemy), but it is also used in some traversal puzzles. Although you don’t need to shoot in mid-air, you always have a strict time limit. In fact, the biggest challenge is to find the crystals needed for shooting on a rotating platform.

If I don’t have any fun at all, Kena’s cute elf buddies and disturbing enemies will not let me go on. The characters and environment in the game-sunny forests, moody caves, snow-capped mountains-are not wasted, even if they are not fully adapted, it is fun to play. I like to explore all of these, even though I have to fiddle with the settings to get my satisfactory performance.

Using my GTX 1650 and 8 GB RAM (at the low end where needed), Kena runs very smoothly during the first half of the game. However, from the second half of the year, I started to experience a noticeable drop in frame rate and had to lower the graphics settings to sort out the performance I got at the beginning. The number of Rot visible on the screen is a factor, and there is a setting to limit the number of Rot visible at one time. Developer Ember Lab also said that future patches will include Rot optimization and improvements.

If you want to know where the soul went after Kena beat them so generously, the Bridge of Souls did answer the ultimate question of life, because she crossed to the other side while chasing the soul. What is life like after death? The answer seems to be “always so slightly purple.”
