While other horror games are still trying to solve it, Little Nightmares 2 understands modern horror. Babadook, Midsommar, Get Out, Hereditary… these modern horror classics avoid jumping panic and bloody, but slowly create a chilly, disturbing atmosphere and a constant sense of fear. Little Nightmares 2 is like its predecessor, weaving all these feelings through its gameplay, while others in the genre still focus on what happens at night.

Speaking of things that give you headaches, Little Nightmare 2 provides what I am pretty sure even in early February will be my biggest video game panic of the year. You play as a little boy Mono, trying to break into a world full of huge, scary adults, one of whom is a strict senior school teacher. This alone is enough to make me feel scared, so imagine my fear when her neck starts to slip off her shoulders with a deep, sinister twitch.

The only way to survive is to hide or surpass her, and she tries to swallow you like a snake. Eventually, it becomes a bit overused and loses its tingling sensation, but the game always seems to know when the fear of monsters is downplayed and shuffles them in exchange for new beasts. A few times it persisted for too long, the once terrible creatures turned into a bunch of nasty pixels, and you were tired of running away, but in most cases, the balance was correct.

Even if the game is a bit too much, you have to praise how many changes it compresses in the level, which seems very similar at first glance. It is difficult to find a screenshot without a gray-blue hue. It is deliberately dim, with a small light spot around the player character, and some ugly and blocky things are faintly visible in the dark background. It is dedicated to this aesthetic in almost every frame, just looking at the image in isolation, you would think that the artistic style will get old after a period of time, which is forgivable. However, due to some smart level design challenges and relatively short running time, it has never really been done.

This is because the sets are so strange and compelling that they become the center of attention. In addition to the teacher of the Snake Neck School, there are the ancient horror staple food of the Grab Hand Wall, and a strange puzzle. You need to find different pieces to complete this group of pieces. The king’s bowler hat, not a wooden ornament, but a—perhaps once alive—a puppet boy, lying on the chess piece with his eyes closed, his limbs tied in place with a rope, and a small yellow crown on his head.

When I saw this nightmare chess game, I didn’t scream, unless you have a chess phobia, I doubt you will too. But this again perfectly explains why “Little Nightmare 2” is such an excellent horror game. This is not to make you scream, or even to scare you. This is the idea of nightmares, all the unusual fears our brain might vomit at night, and mix them with one core idea: No one likes to be chased by something bigger than them.

Although “This is a chasing game” is a simple simplification of “Little Nightmare 2”-doing so ignores the great puzzle aspect of the game-it definitely revolves around squeezing every bit of creation from a relatively simple game loop Constructed from the concept of force.

Aesthetics plays an important role in enhancing the inherent creepiness of the game, and every step creates an ominous feeling. It is tempting to continue focusing on the visual effects, but the gameplay is not just to guide you from one scene to the next. It provides very little guidance or operation (except for the literal handshake mechanism with your partner 6), but it suits the creepy tone and welcomes this trust in the player. Six can basically help you complete the puzzle, provide you with general tips when you encounter difficulties, and protect her to push a lot of narratives, although it may be loose.

Little Nightmares 2 takes full advantage of the open space. Since this is a 2.5D event, sometimes you can stroll into the background to explore, and sometimes you will find hidden collectibles or Easter eggs. This is still limited-the camera stays fixed, and eventually you will hit an invisible wall-but it makes the level feel more like a real place, rather than a simple A to B pass like in other side scrollers String.

The puzzle also makes good use of space, albeit in a very different way. Although exploration makes the level wider than it initially seems, the puzzles usually occur in small, truncated spaces. This makes it easier to explore the hidden keys, secret levers, and evilly scribbled solutions in every corner and crevice. Therefore, even more complex solutions are not too frustrating, because you always know that the solution is somewhere.

Unfortunately, regardless of whether it occurs in a large space or a small space, the combat effectiveness is quite bad. Thankfully, it is rarely used, but if you have to work hard to get out of trouble, be prepared for endless frustration. That’s because all the melee weapons you provide are too big for you, so you have to drag them across the floor, lift them up, and knock them down. It is too slow because some enemies are swarming or rushing towards you quickly.

Little Nightmares 2 From the disturbing atmosphere and wonderful character design to the fascinating puzzles, most things are done well, but the battle is wobbly (very slow) mistakes. This is a game that pulls you into the shadows, knowing how to get panic without slapstick horror. It runs through a lot of the same notes-usually the same as the original notes-but it plays so well that it never feels repetitive. Make full use of your partner, Six, Little Nightmare 2 is well established on the basis of the first game, but the main thing is to stick to what it knows best to achieve good results.
