It’s fun to make up your own swear words, and the developers of Not for Broadcast seem to agree. After starting out with some more traditional swear words, it quickly made its way into the game, with various wibbleclips being added to the list of naughty words. This is important because, as a visual mixer of nightly TV news programs, it’s your job to review them so as not to offend the sensitive ears of viewers. That includes the government.

If they hear a horrible sound like “wumple” or “kupt” — not to mention a news anchor talking about a cock he has over a foot tall — they’ll shut down in droves. That would be bad because your performance is being measured.

As Alex Winston, a non-gender-specific cleaner in a TV studio, you made the mistake of answering the phone. It was election night, the Advance party had a landslide victory on a platform slightly to the left of Michael Foot, and for some reason the regular visual mixer decided to leave the country. That’s him on the phone, talking to you through the controls so the nightly news can go out as usual. Considering the number of parties he goes to, it’s surprising that he still has a work ethic to guide you, really.

You are the only one responsible for what the country sees in the news, so when the advancing party starts some suspicious behavior, you can follow the party line or try to subvert it.

Somehow, you’ve become a regular in the job, taking charge of the four cameras in the studio and any outside broadcasts, choosing which one to show to the nation. There are some guidelines not to linger on a photo for too long and to keep the camera on the person speaking. Then there are tasks like cueing ads, fighting distractions, and shouting curses. You can do any of these with the mouse, but they also have keyboard shortcuts, so you might use the mouse to stay ahead of distractions, while using the number keys to switch between angles during interviews and hitting spaces to eliminate bad language drunk Respondents. I’ve been laughing and reading the script.

Then it gets complicated. You are the only one responsible for what the country sees in the news, so when the advancing party starts some suspicious behavior, you can follow the party line or try to subvert it. Your choice of ad or image can improve the fortunes of the company in which you own a stake, but if you get this wrong or your political manipulations, things can quickly go awry.

News programs quickly become government propaganda, forcing you to decide what to broadcast, which in turn affects your family life. These clips, which take the form of text-based interludes between TV chaos, are where politics tries to make itself feel, when you’re faced with decisions about whether to help your family escape the regime, how to further extend the food for Christmas, or when you’ve booked Disregarding station manager’s work orders during holidays. The contrast between your home life and professional life is stark.

As an example, an early interview with a police chief who had some strong and offensive views, during which a lame man fell out of a cabinet behind him, and he stood up to show that he was wearing a long barrel under a clean white shirt socks. It’s not what you’d call subtle, and may make some people feel chilled rather than warmed by laughter.

There’s a chance for some real political satire here, but the blow fails because the humor is so stupid. The parts are really fun, but other times you want Noel Edmunds or Jeremy Beadle to show up (if you’re blissfully unaware of British TV in the 80s, there really isn’t any context to help with those references other than Google, where should you be? Beware of Noseybonk). A darker edge might help, some sort of commentary on current events in Downing Street and beyond, but instead we get a fictional movement with chaotic rules, children’s toys on fire, shocking youth theatre, and acronym MOOBS

A bunch of people got together, decided to release what’s essentially an FMV game in 2022 (hey, it works for Telling Lies), and filmed some of the dumbest, most offensive, farce news clips and commercials outside of Monty Python sketch, which is awesome. These guys are really enjoying it and it’s great to see. You can always watch movies on a virtual video player just to catch the clips you missed.

But don’t expect brass eyes, as any commentary on modern politics, other than “oppressive government bad,” may be trivial or even non-existent. Actual interactivity is also limited, and despite trying to introduce new mechanics like dealing with thunderstorms, keeping everything running smoothly and pleasing the audience, and a naked swearing cop pulling your attention from the top left is really enough to get anyone Abandon live TV.
