I’ve never thought about the “skip dialogue” button in video games, but after playing The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. The button (it’s a physical button in the game world, so you have to stand in a specific place to use it) is just one of several new features you can spin around in 2013’s “Extended Reimagining” of Stanley’s Fables 1. Once again, put on Stanley’s shoes and turn the act of playing a game into a fun, surprising, and sometimes thoughtful examination of games and game development, players and player choices, and even the consequences of pressing buttons .

I’ll get this out of the way early: Looking back at Stanley’s Fables: Ultra Deluxe Edition feels like a trap, considering that part of this expanded version takes place in the Museum of Memory, where the narrator reads the original game aloud from several comments. Not only are professional reviews from Destructoid and GameSpot, framed and wall-mounted and lit by candlelight (90% of PC Gamer’s own reviews are missing, I noticed with some disappointment), but Steam user reviews are unceremoniously piled up Dumped, scattered around the rainy shipyard, one of the suggestions requires skipping the dialogue button because the narrator talks too much. It does give you something to think about when you hit the new skip dialogue button because the narrator talks a little too much.

Back to my point: reviewing a game so willing to shine for its own reviews seems a bit like stepping on a trapdoor labeled “trap door.” On the other hand, walking into the trap you’ve been warned to stay away from, and doing things you shouldn’t do before you find out that the game really wants you to do it, is how you play Stanley’s Fables. So why not review it?maybe it will end in a stanley fable about– Repost one day.

but what is even Yes Super luxurious? This isn’t just a remake, and while the original first-person game has been so faithfully recreated, it took me a few hours to realize it’s no longer in Source Engine, but in Unity. You can once again play the role of office worker Stanley who one day realizes he is the only person in the building and sets out to discover what happened to his co-workers as a gentle storybook narrative guides him through the empty corridor. The simple act of disobeying your instructions and making your own choices leads to many branching paths, a series of narrator reactions, multiple endings, and the sheer joy of doing something unexpected and finding out that the game fully expects you to.

But at some point in the reruns of the old Stanley Fables, the new content for Ultra Deluxe starts to invade. It’s not a subtle introduction — a door labeled “What’s New” appears in a familiar office hallway you’ve walked through a dozen times. Step through it, and a bunch of new features roll out for you to approve. For example, Stanley could pick up a bucket to carry with him.

Remember this? Now you can remember it with the bucket. (Image credit: Crow Crow Crow)

fun bucket

That’s it. It’s just a bucket, a little joke, based on the idea that some players found the original game confusing, so this “peace bucket” can now be carried around as a companion to avoid any discomfort or uncertainty. But, of course, a simple joke in the hands of developer Crows Crows Crows (the studio founded by one of The Stanley Parable’s original creators) will never stay simple. The barrel got new comments from the narrator, which made me wonder if anything else changed while I was holding it. What if I climb out the window with the bucket, or take it to the boss’s office, or take it with me to one of the original game’s multiple endings? What if I restart the game with the bucket and bring the bucket back to where it was originally given to me?can i get it two bucket?

Stanley’s Fables: Ultra Deluxe Edition does an excellent job of predicting anything a player might do while playing Stanley’s Fables with a bucket in hand, and the experiment pays off with more humor, confusion, absurdity, and a little bit more nuanced to the game’s design. and thoughtful exploration of player choices.

Have I legally developed an emotional attachment to the bucket?

Once I decided to try and get rid of the bucket, which was a long task, I was rewarded with a “replacement bucket”, which I also stubbornly got rid of, after which I restarted the game and found…I don’t have the bucket anymore.

As silly as it may sound, I have to admit that I was really panicking. Have I legally developed an emotional attachment to the bucket? no no. Just carrying buckets with you unlocks a lot of new endings (and bucket-based revisions of the game’s original endings), so I’m worried that without buckets I might miss some secret endings, some narrations, or some of the collectibles in the Stanley Fables experience One of those silly or thought-provoking moments.

(By the way, Ultra Deluxe does add text collectibles. I definitely recommend collecting them all, even if you’re repeatedly told there won’t be any rewards for collecting them. That’s true, no. But then again, there are .)

Eventually, I did get my vat of warranties back and damn, as stupid as it felt to say that, I felt reassured to hold it again. That’s really the genius of Ultra Deluxe: it makes you laugh at a joke and then slowly makes you realize how much truth there is in the joke.

I was told that this ending was not enough. (Image credit: Crow Crow Crow)

There’s more than a bucket in Ultra Deluxe – I just don’t want to spoil the rest of the new features or even reveal how They were revealed because it was almost perfect for video games of video games. I’ve been playing for about 10 hours and I’m pretty sure I haven’t discovered all the tricks and treats of Ultra Deluxe.

As with the original game, there’s quite a bit of futile wandering through some parts of the office that you’ve experienced many times before, trying to discover new things where nothing new. There were also moments of patience when the narration went on for too long and I found myself restlessly continuing to explore instead of standing still and listening. (However, I definitely don’t think it needs another skip dialog button. One is enough.)

But for the most part, Ultra Deluxe is an adventure full of delightful surprises and a keen, interesting look at the game, how we play it, what we expect from it, and what they expect from us.
