Incredibly, the World of Warcraft Classic still feels like the wormhole of the past gaming era. I am sure that the magic of WoW Classic’s 2019 release cannot be reproduced, but I was wrong. After completing a few hours of mission, I randomly joined a group of strangers to challenge a new dungeon in Burning Crusade Classic. What was supposed to be a 20-minute run turned into a 4-hour marathon. When I finally lay in bed at 3 in the morning, I not only prepared some sweet new loot for my undead warlock, but also had a brand new guild of friends to play with.

Unlike the release of “World of Warcraft Classic”, most people sit there staring at the queue for hours, and I have been playing games without interruption.

This is the enduring black magic of “World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic”. This is a heartbreaking grind and ruthless battle, smashing players together like atoms, triggering a chain reaction, and establishing new friendships with impressive and profound rules. But to maintain these continuous reactions requires unfathomable time and energy, which makes my heart miss all the time in the world when I was a teenager. Burning Crusade Classic is great, but you have to give up most of your life to experience it all.

When I reviewed WoW Classic for the first time in 2019, it became an easy-to-recommend game largely because of its ease of use. For the price of a monthly subscription fee, anyone can start a new character and return to the dawn of Blizzard’s basic MMO. The veterans of the old Warcraft finally got what they wanted, and the brand-new players can take a virtual tour of one of the most important chapters in the history of PC games. This is an experience where anyone can get something out of it, no matter how much time they are immersed in it.

This is not the case with the Burning Crusade classics. Even to explore seven new areas, you need a 58-level character, which can be acquired by casual players for months. Or, you can pay $35 for an ridiculously high one-time level upgrade, which provides you with junk-level equipment and trivial gold coins, which can hardly help you complete the first few tasks in Outland. I’m not against Blizzard’s charging for shortcuts, but it feels like paying a high price for a historical tour of Rome and then receiving a crumpled MapQuest print and a bottle of cheap travel sunscreen.

Outlands is Blizzard’s first real use of imagination in Warcraft, and the result is a spectacular combination of fantasy and science fiction.

Unfortunately, these daunting entry requirements will inevitably discourage so many people, because the “Burning Crusade Classic” is very special. At this moment, World of Warcraft began to transform from a chaotic experiment into a pop culture phenomenon, attracting more than 100 million people, and its characteristics and ideas not only shaped the future of World of Warcraft, but also shaped the entire genre.

After struggling for many years in Azeroth, the players were pushed into the Dark Portal and entered an impressive landscape at the time. In most cases, “The Burning Crusade Classic” is a faithful reproduction of that era-although Blizzard did make more changes based on community feedback. However, the biggest surprise is that so far, except for the overpopulation of the mission area (expected in the release week), my foray into the foreign domain has been very smooth. Unlike the release of “World of Warcraft Classic”, most people sit there staring at the queue for hours, and I have been playing games without interruption.

Going back to this outdated version of Warcraft and discovering many timeless and interesting aspects is interesting-and sympathize with those who are not. It’s cool to see that huge fel predator stomping on the blood red field of Hellfire Peninsula and killing any players who ventured too close. But I definitely don’t have to wait for a specific monster to respawn for five minutes, because someone killed it a few seconds before I got there.

Outlands is Blizzard’s first real use of imagination in Warcraft, and the result is a spectacular combination of fantasy and science fiction. A huge steampunk drain pump undulates among the huge blue mushrooms of Zangar Marsh, while a huge moon hangs over the idyllic hills of Nagrand. It reminds me a lot of “The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind”-a fascinating alien landscape that has not deteriorated over time.

Slow and steady

This is not a game you play, but a hardship you overcome—to unite players together, overcome adversity and pain.

Stopping and smelling the neon blue flowers of Outland is a natural result slow The classic action of the burning expedition. Its new level 70 cap will require most level 60 players to reach the time it takes them to reach level 60 (approximately 50 hours or so). When I submit another task and watch my experience bar jump forward a pixel or two, it is an often frustrating ordeal. This lazy rhythm will stifle the determination of anyone who is accustomed to more modern MMOs. In these modern MMO games, upgrades are just the free bread you choose before your meal.

However, those who can adapt to this ancient method of MMO will find a lot of fun. The sense of danger pervading every area is fascinating, because only in a village surrounded by NPC guards can I be truly safe. The monsters are small in number and can cope with them, but it is easy to accidentally arouse the anger of too many people and have to flee for their lives. This means that I must always be involved and aware, which deepens my connection with the world around me. This is very different from the modern World of Warcraft. In the modern World of Warcraft, the task is very easy and it feels completely meaningless. In Burning Crusade Classic, I feel like I am just a small part of a larger and more hostile world.

Burning Crusade Classic Nothing is taken for granted, even the smallest accomplishment feels immortal. When I level up, or when a piece of equipment falls into the dungeon, nearby players will stop to congratulate me. This is for a reason. If this is a major upgrade for a player, my party will chatter excitedly.

This is not a game you play, but a hardship you overcome—to unite players together, overcome adversity and pain. In contrast, it seems cute that children born in the Dark Souls generation tell each other “git gud”. Try to run back to your corpse for another 5 minutes, because Fen Rays in The Underbog is afraid that your tank will directly hit the other two groups of monsters for the fifth time. Zug Zug, bitches.

In contrast, the challenge of accepting or giving up makes many modern MMOs feel too scarce and clingy. Daily login rewards, limited time progress, easy upgrades, and a thousand other little hooks scratch me when I desperately tried to arouse my interest, but the Burning Crusade classic flipped the script: I must win a place in Outland—or Through sheer patience, skill, or with friends. No wonder millions of gamers are fascinated by it: the confidence of the Burning Crusade itself as a journey worth enduring is bold.

However, although the gameplay of “Burning Crusade Classic” may be cruel, there are still many improvements that make it more palatable than the “World of Warcraft” classic. The mission still relies heavily on killing all the creatures in Outland multiple times, but they are intertwined with the narrative rhythm and help convey the story of each area. The Quest Center is more organized and less casual, which means less time wasted back and forth. Although the ending of “World of Warcraft” nostalgia is inconsistent, “Burning Crusade” improved it to more digestible and structured content. The classic 40-person raid is gone forever, and now it is replaced by a 10-person raid like Karazhan, or a 25-person raid like the Dark Temple at most.

I rarely play MMO, and complete strangers often find a place in my friends list.

If you have ever lamented the endgame of modern World of Warcraft, please play “The Burning Crusade Classic” for a while. It’s incredible how big it is. Once a player reaches level 70, they have 15 dungeons, each with a heroic difficulty version, which must be unlocked by honing reputation in certain factions. At the same time, any aspiring attacker must complete a huge task line called “adjustment” before they can embark on this attack. There are so many things to do—including saving enough coins to buy flying mounts—so that when the first major patch of “Burning Crusade” is released and more things are added, few players are ready to welcome it. Today, the new World of Warcraft patch feels like Blizzard throws bread at the hungry crowd.

On the downside, “Burning Crusade” is an expansion designed for the hardest players of “World of Warcraft”, and it can hardly cater to the more casual crowd. In addition to running dungeons or raids, most players will hone monsters or repeat missions to gain small increments of faction reputation needed to unlock the next step. Later patches will introduce some nice catch-up features, such as better access to equipment and new areas, but anyone serious about playing the Burning Crusade classic must accept the fact that it takes at least hundreds of hours to complete repetitive tasks or time after time Kill the same few monsters at once. If you decide to play a different course and have to start the whole journey from level one, God will help you.

Grinding has now become a dirty word in the game, but in the Burning Crusade classic, it is a badge of honor. Even though I have had moments of frustration or boredom—even to the point of quitting—my patience is reset every time I have a cool encounter with another player. I rarely play MMO, and complete strangers often find a place in my friends list. Now I was sitting with another player waiting for the mission goal of rebirth, and was attracted to the conversation that led us to join forces for several hours. These moments feel as special as they were more than ten years ago.

“World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic” is great and uncompromising-more than the “World of Warcraft” classic. Most of you can pass with confidence and enjoy all the extra time for other games, friends, family, and hobbies. But for WoW Classic’s large and loyal community, this is the beginning of World of Warcraft’s transformation into an MMO that takes over the world.
