Activision Blizzard reverses vaccine decision after strike

Last week, Activision Blizzard told employees that it would end vaccine mandates for employees returning to the office. Some employees protested the choice, declaring a strike on Monday, April 4 (today, as this story airs). Now, members of the ABK Workers Union have announced that Activision Blizzard has changed course and now intends to let individual studios set their own vaccination and testing policies.

“ABK leadership has heard us and on Friday after our request became public, they withdrew their position to immediately remove the vaccination policy and now allow studios to set their own policies,” the ABK Workers Union said in a statement Say Statement on social media today. “We currently know that four studios have changed course and have a vaccine/testing policy in place. We believe we can make a difference by continuing to speak up!”

Activision Blizzard said in a statement Friday (via Polygon) that “for the majority of our employees, we are still operating with a voluntary return to the office”. The company also said it “will not retaliate for any decision to participate in this strike.”

The ABK Workers Union is currently pushing for two key demands: “make it an open and fair option for all employees to work from home” and “reverse the requirement for all other studios that have not yet deauthorized their vaccines”.

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry.
