Blizzard wants DnD players to make the next game

Last month, Blizzard announced plans to create a new survival game in an “entirely new universe.” But that doesn’t appear to be the only unannounced project in the studio’s work. A new job listing suggests that games based on existing Blizzard IP will be somewhat inspired by Dungeons & Dragons worlds and tabletop role-playing.

The lead content designer’s list (found by the folks at ResetEra) looks for someone who can “provide a clear vision for mechanically and narratively interesting quests in established Blizzard IP.” The listing specifies that this is a new unreleased game, but does not specify a platform. (It’s worth noting, however, that most mobile-centric job listings are so labeled on Blizzard’s careers page.)

Notably, Blizzard is looking for people with “experience in creating and running pen and paper RPG campaigns and/or live-action RPGs” and “love of RPG games (desktop or computer).” The listing proposes single-player and shared-world designs for these narrative missions, though it doesn’t make it clear what form they’ll take, or how the project is influenced by the ethos of tabletop design.

Of course, the lack of detail is to be expected if the project is still in early development.

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry. You can read about all the progress so far in this regularly updated explainer article.

Overwatch 2’s release date and Diablo 4’s release date are of course the big things we’re looking for from Blizzard on PC. With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard and Xbox boss Phil Spencer looking to get more people to play World of Warcraft, it looks like there’s plenty of room for both sides of the company to grow.
