Intel will disable AVX-512 on its 12th generation CPU

Intel will completely disable the AVX-512 instruction set on its entire Alder Lake CPU family. Before writing the release review, we have no reason not to believe Intel because it claims that AVX-512 is not available on the 12th generation CPU. However, it didn’t take long for motherboard manufacturers and users to discover that the omission of AVX-512 turned out to be a soft lock. Disabling the E core means that the motherboard manufacturer can enable AVX-512 on the P core through the BIOS. However, Intel is already among the top, which means that it will always be the protagonist of AVX-512 on Alder Lake.

According to Igorslab, Intel has advised motherboard manufacturers to block AVX-512 support at the BIOS level, possibly through microcode updates. This means that any workarounds discovered so far will be invalid.

According to the motherboard manufacturers we interviewed, AVX-512 is a late omission in the official 12th generation specification. The VRM designs of most high-end motherboards are much more powerful than they need. One main reason is: AVX-512. According to your requirements, AVX-512 can provide very useful performance improvements, but only for a limited number of applications. Others consider it to be a power virus. It is well known that reviewers use heavy AVX loads to simulate worst-case stress test scenarios to generate maximum temperature and power consumption readings.

Cynics might say that Intel disabled AVX-512 to reduce extreme power consumption readings in the comments. The 12th generation CPUs are very good, but their efficiency per watt is not as good as AMD. If AVX-512 is widely used for release review, it will be considered worse and may overshadow the otherwise excellent CPU.

Although AVX-512 consumes a lot of power, some applications (including the RPCS3 PS3 emulator) miss AVX-512. We discussed how it provides a huge performance upgrade when it is enabled, so if you can take advantage of AVX-512 support, from now on, if you can help, it is best not to upgrade your BIOS.
