Lord of the Stars DLC lets you rule the Galactic Empire

Stellaris’ next expansion, Overlord, will give players the chance to surpass Emperor Palpatine and take full control of the galaxy. With developer Paradox Interactive announcing that Overlord’s release date has been set for May 12, we had a chance to chat with Stellaris’ new game director about what the expansion adds to 4X Games’ impressive suite of interstellar empire management tools.
“In Overlord, we started off with a desire to improve the interaction between the theme and Overlord,” explained game director Stephen Murray, who took over from outgoing director Daniel Moregård in March . “Being themed is kind of like delaying the game over, and I hate that. It’s a surprise for new players. It’s growing as we explore some of the fantasies we can see, like, if you’re a Star Overlord, you What can be done? How can we make this interesting, how can we make this interesting, both as overlords and as subjects?”
Overlord adds a new vassal mechanic to Stellaris, allowing rulers to shape their subjects into specialized empires that can become industrial super-producers or military powerhouses. As Overlord, you will be able to broker contracts among your subjects, shaping their growth, development, and relationships with each other.
“I’ve played a lot of Crusader Kings,” Murray told us, explaining that the systems of Crusader Kings III and Iron Hearts IV were instructive in creating Overlords. “Basically, we first looked at what Crusader Kings III did, what people enjoyed there, and we also looked at the puppet system [in Hearts of Iron IV]. “
Obviously, not everything from a medieval system of contract negotiation or World War II foreign policy translates well into a science fiction setting spanning thousands of worlds, but Murray says there’s a fair amount of overlap. “We just have more knobs and whistles,” he said.
Overlord adds five new beginnings: you can start the game from an imperial fief and work your way into a location that takes over galactic domination, or there’s Slingshot to the Stars, where your people discover an abandoned Quantum Shooter near your homeworld , which allows you to quickly spread out across unexplored galaxies.
Overlord has also added new technological feats for you to explore, such as the single-vector projectile mentioned above, orbital rings that turn your planet into a furry defense platform, and the ability to provide your fleet with the ability to rapidly orbit your growing empire. super repeater.
“When we first announced Overlord, there were a lot of questions [from players] About why you’re doing this, rather than doing internal politics or some kind of story pack,” Murray said. Fans were quick to warm up, however, as the development team shared more details about Overlord.
“We want to explore a bunch of fantasies of different players that we don’t have right now, or those fantasies that don’t play well right now,” he said. “We think this will be a great way to continue to give people new ways to play and new experiences.”
Fortunately, Murray said the community is in a good position right now, and player sentiment is at an all-time high. He believes Stellaris will keep the momentum going.
“I have a huge advantage here compared to past game directors because our hosting team is well-equipped and well-functioning,” he said. “We’ve had them always spend at least a third of their time looking at what the players are asking and trying to figure it out. I think that’s really the key to what we’ve done so well. It’s the perfect time to play this game, really Yes, because they keep fixing things. They keep making things better. So with the extension team, we can keep adding new things to explore.”
