Six-core or more CPUs are becoming the new standard for Steam users

Before getting too excited about 2022 hardware releases such as Nvidia’s RTX 4000 GPUs and AMD’s Zen 4 CPUs, we’d better take the time to analyze and reflect on the last Steam Hardware Survey in 2021. Data for December shows that the dominance of quad-core CPUs is slowly but surely coming to an end.

The percentage of Steam users with quad-core processors has continued to decline since October 2021, but it was not until November 2021 that 6 or more CPU cores exceeded 5 or fewer, reaching 50.54%. Since then, that jumped to 52.20% (+1.66), with six-core chips likely to soon become the de facto spec of choice, accounting for 32.41% (+1.22) versus 35.10% (-1.02) of quad-core rigs running Steam.

This shift has been a long time coming, as quad-core CPUs have been around for a little over fifteen years. That said, quad-core is still plenty for most of the best PC games, and makes for a great budget option with Intel’s new low-to-mid-range 12th Gen Core chips.

Speaking of Intel, the company still seems to be fighting some battles with AMD in order to convince consumers that it has the best gaming CPU on the market. Following the release of its Alder Lake processors, the blue team has managed to regain its market share to its pre-September 2021 figure of 69.27% (+0.82). However, both companies have released new mobile chips, the 12th Gen Core H-series and the Ryzen 6000-series, so 2022 could be a turbulent year in terms of processor market share.

Other developments include that Windows 11 64-bit now accounts for over 10% of the Steam user base, or 10.15% (+1.87). As of last month, it managed to become the second most popular version of Windows on the Valve platform, but it still has a long way to go to replace Windows 10. Moving to VR, the Oculus Quest 2 continued to gain popularity, with 39.62% (+3.30) of players opting to use Meta’s wireless headset to enter virtual reality.
