Steam Deck – Release Date, Price, Specs and Benchmarks

⌨️

Valve is entering the handheld gaming PC market with Steam Deck, which launches on February 25th. Prices start at $399/£349 for the 64GB version, but you can get the Steam Deck with 256GB or 512GB of NVMe storage for $529/£459 and $649/£569 respectively.

In terms of specs, the Steam Deck is powered by a custom AMD APU built on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. However, this particular chip has RDNA 2 graphics. This is the same microarchitecture used to power Team red’s best graphics cards, which should help it run everything from indie games to the latest AAA titles. The storage capacity will vary between models, but they all come with 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

Steam Deck isn’t Windows 11, it’s Valve’s new SteamOS 3. It’s a Linux-based operating system, but you can install other operating systems if you want. However, Proton’s compatibility has been significantly improved to the point where you may not need it.

Here’s what we know about Steam Decks:

Steam platform release date

Steam Deck is scheduled to launch on February 25th. However, those with pre-orders will need to pay the remainder of the pre-order fee before the new handheld gaming PC ships.

If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, you’ll have to wait in line to use the Steam Deck. You can still pre-order one of these three models for a small fee of $5/£4.

steam deck price

Three models of Steam Decks are available, with slightly different specs, but very different prices. The base model costs $399/£349 with 64GB of eMMC storage. For $529/£459, you can upgrade to the Steam platform with 256GB of NVMe storage, which also comes with an exclusive Steam Community Pack.

The screen on this most expensive $649/£569 512GB model features premium anti-glare etched glass, making it a better choice for outdoor gaming. It also comes in a slightly larger boujie carrying case, but in the same retail packaging (complete with Portal Easter eggs).

Steam Deck Specifications

No matter which model of Steam platform you choose, you can expect the same level of performance on each version of the device. All Steam decks feature a custom AMD quad-core Zen 2 APU with 8 threads, a base clock of 2.4GHz and a boost clock of 3.5GHz. It also has an RDNA 2 iGPU and 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, which should help fit future devices nicely.

It uses a 7-inch IPS touch screen with a resolution of 1280×800 and a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz. While the colors won’t pop as much as the Switch OLED panels, the Deck should still have excellent viewing angles. A peak brightness of 400 nits should be great for outdoor gaming, as the Switch Lite only excels at 380 nits.

The Steam Deck has all the buttons you’d expect to find on the best PC controllers, plus a gyroscope and two trackpads. You can also easily upgrade any Steam Deck’s storage with a microSD card, which is required for the 64GB model as the OS will take up 15% of its internal storage.

Steam Deck Performance

Steam Deck’s 1.6 teraflop GPU is somewhere between the Xbox One S and PS4.That might not sound impressive until you realize that Valve’s handheld gaming PC can take advantage of AMD FSR to boost fps and a lot of More portable than any console bar on the Nintendo Switch.

We know that Valve’s handheld gaming PCs are capable of running iconic games from the previous generation of consoles, such as Horizon Zero Dawn. Although, given the prowess of its hardware, we likely won’t be running many games at max or too high settings.

Although the Deck’s 15W power consumption rating is relatively low, Valve’s battery life during gaming is between 2 and 8 hours, depending on your gaming requirements. That’s significantly lower compared to the Nintendo Switch, which can run for four and a half to nine hours on battery power. However, driver-level enhancements can give devices longer battery life.
