World of Warcraft update fixes motion sickness in two dungeons

🌐

A new World of Warcraft update brings some relief to players who get motion sickness while playing two MMO dungeons. Motion sickness affects a lot of people in video games, so developers are always looking for accessibility options to help minimize its negative impact on the player experience. Recently, a World of Warcraft player posted on the Blizzard forums seeking to fix such issues, and received some good news in return.

User Maizou noted that while options like disabling camera shake have been shown to help reduce the effects of motion sickness, certain areas and encounters are particularly problematic. Grimrail Depot, a dungeon that takes place on a moving train, and Maw of Souls, which lets players board a ship, tend to cause problems due to their constantly moving background.

Maizou emphasizes that this cannot be mitigated by careful camera placement, as some mechanics in the dungeon require the player to see the entire arena, and the motion sickness is so severe that every time they are rotated by the Timewalking dungeon into the Grimrail Depot to let them” Lie in bed for hours and felt like I was going to throw up, to be honest.”

Thankfully, a designer on the WoW team calling himself Ken came up with a clever solution based on advice from players dealing with motion sickness. By consuming the elixir that can be collected from the “Motion Sick Peon” NPC found at the start of the two dungeons above, the moving background will now be replaced by the static background while in the dungeon. Ken noted, “This is a localized fix for these two problematic locations.”

At this point, both Grimrail Warehouses and Maw of Soul Eater are fairly old dungeons, but the issue has resurfaced as Grimrail dungeons are considered mythical+ status in the upcoming Shadowlands update. Whatever the reason, more accessibility options are always a plus, and it’s certainly a welcome change for many players with motion sickness. Community manager Bornakk noted that the team will continue to focus on other areas where a similar system might apply.

In July 2021, the state of California filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard alleging years of discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The story has since embroiled CEO Bobby Kotick and prompted an investigation by the U.S. federal government. It continues to grow and is of immense importance to the gaming industry.
